Lockerbie railway station lies on the West Coast Main Line between Carlisle and Carstairs in the town of Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
Lockerbie station is managed by Abellio ScotRail but run no services to or from the station. Lockerbie is the only railway station in Scotland that is not served by Abellio ScotRail. All services are provided by Virgin Trains and TransPennine Express on franchises determined by the Department for Transport (DfT) within the UK Government.
Sporadic attempts to provide passenger forums often fall on local council or Swestrans staff to try and mitigate but local ignorance of due process must be regularly reminded that this one’s on the UK Government Department for Transport and they need held to account for monitoring the performance of the franchisees, TPE and Avanti. The Constituency MP is the way in here but is usually silent or unclear about responsibility.
Theories have suggested that because the West Coast Main Line is the key strategic link between Scotland’s major cities and the rest of mainland UK, it is being kept under the control of the Westminster Government as a strategic placeholder.
Attempts to run a local service or reopen stations on the line for the population catchment of Scottish towns from Gretna through Ecclefechan, Lockerbie, Beattock (for Moffat), Abington, Symington (serving Biggar), and Carstairs, are resisted. This section of line is almost exclusively in the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale constituency which is currently served, ironically, by Scotland’s singular Conservative and Unionist MP, the Secretary of State for Scotland.
TransPennine Express provides services, operating a mostly hourly service to Manchester Airport and an hourly service operates northbound changing between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Virgin Trains provide 6 daily services, with 3 trains per day to Glasgow Central, 1 to Birmingham New Street, 1 to London Euston and 1 to Crewe.
